#BlogTour and #BookReview: An Eye For An Eye by Carol Wyer

I am delighted to be today’s stop on the blog tour for Carol Wyer’s latest publication – AN EYE FOR AN EYE (Detective Kate Young Book 1). Huge thanks to Emma at Damppebbles Blog Tours for inviting me to take part in the tour.

Publisher: Thomas & Mercer – Amazon Publishing
Publication Date: 1 February 2021

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence—and her grip on reality—called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

I love finding a great new crime series and AN EYE FOR AN EYE definitely fits the bill.

DCI Kate Young is troubled (slight understatement!) and it looks like she might be returning to work a bit too quickly. Yet there’s a murder that needs solving and Kate can’t say no. She’s a great character – likeable, gutsy, clever, a great detective and yet clear suffering from horrendous PTSD. The author deals with this issue sensitively and I enjoyed the contrast between Kate’s vulnerability and her fast-paced and hard-hitting job.

There are some interesting supporting character, namely Morgan and Emma (Kate’s team), and I’m looking forward to getting to know them better in subsequent books.

The plot is gripping. A wealthy business man is murdered in quite a unique way and everyone seems to have an alibi. When more bodies turn up, Kate and her team are racing against the clock to track down the killer. Well-paced and well-plotted, there are dead bodies, missing eyes (although fortunately not too gory!), a number of potential suspects, some twists and turns, and plenty of intrigue – I certainly found it to be quite a page turner! The ending was very satisfying and definitely left me wondering about the next book in the series.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Carol Wyer’s past books and this new one has proved no exception. This entertaining and clever crime thriller is a fantastic start to a new series and I am now thoroughly looking forward to book #2! I’d happily recommend this book to those of you who enjoy a policy procedural or crime thriller.
