I need your help. Call me.
Ex-intelligence agent James Ryker receives a coded message through a secret drop point, a means of communication known only to him and one other person. The problem is, that person is his ex-boss, Mackie… and he’s already dead.
But the cry for help is real, and it’s a request Ryker can’t refuse.
Travelling to New York alone and without official sanction, Ryker has a single goal in mind, yet even he couldn’t have bargained for the violent world he’s soon embroiled in. Caught in the middle o a spiraling chaos, with the FBI on one side and warring underworld bosses on the other, Ryker must put all of his skills to the test in order to come out on top and keep his word.
In a world full of lies and deceit, loyalty is everything, and it’s time for James Ryker to pay his dues.
Review
The Green Viper is the fourth book in the James Ryker series, which means that it is (I think) the ninth book from Rob Sinclair since 2014. That’s pretty impressive figures, particularly when you notice just how positive all his reviews tend to be.
The James Ryker series is a follow-on from Sinclair’s Enemy series. Former Joint Intelligence Agency (JIA) operative, Carl Logan, is back but he’s now living a civilian life under a new identity – James Ryker. Despite no longer being an agent/operative, he finds himself quickly drawn back into his old life, just without the backing of his former agency.
Ryker is a great character. He’s a trained assassin, tough and intelligent, yet he displays loyalty and a depth of emotion that humanises him. He is a likable character, despite the trail of bodies and destruction that seem to follow him – a flawed hero.
In The Green Viper, Ryker finds himself in slightly new territory. In contrast to the usual globe-trotting espionage missions, Ryker is called upon to assist an old friend and finds himself drawn into the murky New York underworld – a world of drugs, guns, violence and turf wars. Ryker soon finds himself caught between a keen FBI agent and a couple of dangerous gangsters.
As the story storms ahead, Ryker scrambles his way from one impossible situation to the next. He’s caught by loyalty to his dead former boss. Will he be able to successfully complete his mission, whilst simultaneously bringing down the warring underworld king-pins?
The Green Viper quickly draws readers into the action as it delves into New York’s dark and seedy underbelly. It is a fast, intense and thrilling adventure that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The author certainly knows how to build suspense! All-in-all, another gripping novel from author, Rob Sinclair.
The Green Viper can be read as a standalone book, however I personally would recommend reading the series in order so that you get more of an understanding of Ryker’s background.
