Tara Sharp can see auras, and it’s ruining her life.
When she tries to turn her inconvenient secret into a paying gig, her first job lands her in the middle of a tug of war between the biggest, baddest crime lord in town and the hottest business man Tara has ever met.
With only a narcoleptic ex-roadie, her pet galah and a vanilla slice for back up, Tara is ready to take on trouble with a capital ‘T’.
Review
Sharp Shooter was the 2010 winner of the Davitt Award for Best Crime Novel and nominated for the Ned Kelly Award in 2010 for Best First Crime Novel.
The first thing to note, having read Sharp Shooter, is that I honestly cannot remember reading another crime novel set in Australia. That doesn’t really have any bearing on my review, but an interesting point nevertheless. I enjoyed the splattering of local dialect throughout the story.
Sharp Shooter features Tara Sharp, a down-to-earth twenty-something living in her parents’ yard and in need of a job. After meeting the unusual Mr Hara, Tara decides to put her unusual ‘gift’ (reading auras) to good use and make a career as a private investigator/body language expert. Good intentions quickly go astray and Tara finds herself on the wrong side of some very dangerous people.
Tara is a great heroine for the story. She’s strong, plucky, quirky, self-depreciating and has a habit of getting herself into sticky situations.
The plot was original, complex and gripping – an action packed story. There were a number of twists and turns to hold the reader’s interest. The story has great energy and pace, and a sense of fun that I absolutely loved!
The characters were all slightly kooky. I particularly liked the dynamics between Tara, her mentor Mr Hara and the formidable Mrs Hara. Hopefully the supporting characters will develop further as the series progresses, as I would be interested to know a bit more about them and their backgrounds.
Sharp Shooter is a light-hearted and past-paced crime romp, with a bit of romance and a lot of humour thrown into the mix. A fast and fun read!
*Sharp Shooter is currently free to download for the Kindle, so you have no reason not to give it a try!*
